Some Cool Blues To Go With The Heat

This may be my favorite song of all time, and not just the song but this particular recording of it.  Somehow it seems a good fit with the heat:

Amazing.  All that sound coming from one guy.  I’m pretty sure that’s the sound of one bare foot slapping, keeping the rhythm throughout.  There’s just nothing I don’t love about this recording – the sound of the guitar, the story, the vocals.  Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

I had the good fortune to see John Lee Hooker perform in Memphis back in the day – I believe he was already 80 years old by then.  One of the few advantages of living in this backwater has been the amazing array of blues artists I’ve been able to see performing live – Albert King, Albert Collins, B.B. King, Buddy Guy (at least 5 times), Koko Taylor, and many, many others.  Being within a 2-1/2 hour drive of both the King Biscuit and Memphis in May festivals has been a good thing.

John Lee’s got some skinny legs.

In “I’m Older Than You” news, I saw Muddy Waters in 19-&-68 at the Eagles Auditorium in Seattle. These guys were the opening act.

    Quite a bill.

Saw Albert King at the Eagles in the ’60s too. We were all impressed by his Flying V git-fiddle.

JLH was the man. I’ve listened to a 13 part lecture series on the radio one hour a week about “The Blues” where various people tried to explain it. You learn more about the blues in this one song than in that whole series.
